Not only does the snow provide impromptu learning for the children, it also gives me, as manager, an impromptu staff observation opportunity that I couldn't miss! Hearing all the fun, giggles and excitement coming from the garden I had to watch and I am so glad I did!
Helen is based within our Reception room alongside Steph, the room manager and what an asset to the team she is! Helen allowed the children time to truly explore the snow and mainly have fun!!! Helen then extended this learning by encouraging the children to use their thinking skills by suggesting different ways in which they could melt the ice, discussing what will happen to the ice, observing the effect of holding the ice in our warm hands and watching the ice melt and drip down the children's hands.
The children recalled past experiences of building snowman, having snowball fights and creating marks with their feet like the Gruffalo!!! It was a joy to watch and seeing all the smiles on the children's faces, I even got a snowball thrown at me! Brrrrr!
